I recently went to see my friend and Physique 57 instructor Alex perform, and those feelings resurfaced. Alex dances for the Amy Marshall Dance Company, a modern dance company going strong in its 11th year. The performance was held at the Ailey Citigroup Theater, home of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Walking past the theater you can see the Ailey dancers rehearse, the windows of the dance studio looking out onto the street. You would think that this would make them self-conscious but the dancers don't bat an eye-lid at the passers-by gaping in. It's called being professional, I suppose!

The performance was beautiful. Modern dance has such a carefree and whimsical quality to it. While I love classical ballet and I danced for a few years when I was younger, I really love going to see modern dance performances. The choreography that night was fun, highly inspired and very athletic. The dancers made everything look so easy as they effortlessly lifted each other high above their heads and landed gracefully after high jumps.
Obviously that was the moment that jolted me back to reality. No, Sam, you cannot be a dancer; but you can still live vicariously looking at captured moments like this...

Question: Would you do anything differently if you had the chance to go back and do it again? Would you choose the same career?

I wish I could dance but seriously I have zero rhythm. Zero!
If I could go back and re-do my career I absolutely would. Instead of choosing something sensible like finance I would have been a bit more adventurous and done something in the publishing industry. I would have loved to be a book scout. Or an editor. Or a literary agent. I don't hate finance but I don't love it as much as I love books.
Great question Sam. I think you already know my answer but If I had the chance to do it again I would be an editor and or stylist. Keep on dancing.
There maybe things I would change but not necessarily things I was ever able to do. Dancing sounds great but I don't think I can dance. I love the idea of being a chef or a professor or writer, still time for those. Loved your dancing photo.
Ameena: Well I'm waiting for you to publish that book of yours!
Pink Lady: You'd make a great stylist!
Lauren:You are absolutely right-there is still time.
your dancing superstar shot cracks me up! in terms of sports dreams, i *wish* i had stuck with gymnastics, even though i really was a terrible gymnast. but i miss it terribly!
i guess i'm at a place where i'm still figuring it all out career-wise, which is pretty exciting. not so much scary anymore, but the uncertainty can be a bit draining at times. hopefully it'll all fall into place? or something? (tell me it will ;))
Sofia: Gymnast, that's a good one! Don't worry, things will fall into place!
I don't think I really chose my career. I just think I needed to make money after my divorce and got sucked into this world. I don't know what I'd be if given the chance to do whatever I want.
And I took a Modern Dance class in college. It was a blast. I learned all about Martha Graham and Modern Dance history.
Oh dancing, my love that I sadly didn't continue. I danced for 17 years then also my first year of college on the dance team. I watch dancers perform now and feel similar to you! I try to pretend I'm a dancer still between Zumba classes and around my guest bedroom!!!
Miranda: I think that happens to a lot of us. Life happens and you just kind of go with the flow.
That dance class sounds amazing!
Sarah: 17 years, wow! I think one of the reasons I love barre workouts so much is that some moves emulate those of dancers'and for the 60 minutes I can pretend that I too am one!
Ah, I have many career "woulda, coulda, shoulda" fantasies. One: Actress (that is what I studied in school, but I am actually glad I am not pursuing it anymore...), Two: Nutritionist (this is a biggie - I fantasize about this one a lot). Three: Writer (hence the blog. Great post! Love the pictures! I am always in awe of dancers - I am very good at exercising my body, but I am also super klutzy and have wonky hips...they don't like to disengage. I can't pop and lock!
Cameo: You studied acting? Interesting. I think you could still study nutrition if you so choose. I think it's a great profession and I really wouldn't mind going back to school to learn more about nutrition.
Well, I enjoy reading your blog and think you write really well, so you have the writer part down pat!
I love your blog!
I also think it's never too late to be a dancer. I have been bellydancing for 7 years and recently saw an 80-year old woman performing. It's never too late! :)
As for what I would do differently....nothing. I actually love my job (though it's not what I started out doing). I have realized that the path to happiness may not be a straight line, but that doesn't mean you're off course. :-)
Sparklingandslimming: Belly dancing's a lot of fun! I took a class years ago-loved it!
Wise words! Thanks for stopping by!
